Programme Structure

The first year’s modules are focused on the building of fundamental theoretical and experimental knowledge in the fields of nanomaterials and on the application of these materials on sensing devices. All students will spend their first semester at Hellenic Mediterranean University and gain basic knowledge on functional nanomaterials. The second semester will be spent at University of Siegen, focussing on sensors, sensing devices and embedded systems.

The knowledge acquired in the first year will be the basis for the specialisation tracks, chosen in the third semester. Here, candidates can choose where to go depending on their specific interests. Five specialisation tracks are offered:

1) Functional Materials with Optoelectronic Properties (Hellenic Mediterrenean University)
2) Embedded Intelligent Sensorics (University of Siegen)
3) Natural Materials and Biosensors (NOVA University Lisbon)
4) Internet of Things (University of Orléans)
5) Sensor systems and Data Processing (Vilnius Gediminas Tecnical University)

At each university, students will conduct a mandatory research lab course during their third semester, that can serve as a preparation for the master’s project.  The fourth semester is fully dedicated to the master’s project. Students should implement their master’s project in the topic of their specialisation track, i.e. it is recommended (but not mandatory) that they stay at one university for their whole second year of studies.

During the five-day winter school at the end of the first semester, students will receive an introduction to the specialisation tracks that can be chosen in the third semester. One full day will be dedicated to each specialisation track. In addition to the general introduction of the specialisation topic, invited speakers from within and the beyond the consortium give lectures on the respective topics.

The summer school, taking place after the second semester, has a duration of five days, with a yearly changing topic in actual research and innovation areas and with participation from industrial and academic guest partners
